Youth services includes both youth leadership building and youth education .
Youth Learning
The Southwest Washington Red Cross offers a variety of youth courses that give kids the safety training they need to respond to potential emergencies and make responsible choices.
Safe On My Own is a two and half hour class that covers personal safety, basic first aid, how to get help in emergency, sibling care, internet safety and how to answer the phone or door when home alone.
We offer a 7 hour Babysitter’s Training course or a more in depth three day Babysitting Boot Camp. Babysitter’s Training teaches youth leadership skills, care-giving and how to effectively respond to life threatening emergencies. Babysitting Boot Camp goes further by teaching infant and child CPR and providing the students with the experience of caring for a simulator infant.
Basic Aid Training is a six hour safety education class that teaches basic first aid skills and step-by-step actions to take in an emergency.
We have exceptional Red Cross certified instructors who use a variety of teaching methods to keep students interested and engaged. All courses include a take home workbook.

Youth Leadership
The American Red Cross youth leadership program began in Southwest Washington in 2000 with one high school club. Since then, the program has grown to include twelve high school Red Cross clubs and affiliate clubs, one middle school club, one elementary school club, and the American Red Cross Southwest Washington Youth Council (a leadership group with student representation from eleven area high schools). Combined, there are more than 400 active youth volunteers!
Youth volunteers are involved in a variety of community leadership and service learning activities which touch every line of service of the American Red Cross:
 Blood Services—high school blood drives are the largest individual blood drives in Southwest Washington! Skyview High School collects over 300 units of blood each year … enough to save nearly 1000 lives!- Disaster Services—youth not only raise thousands of dollars each year to help those affected by natural and man-made disasters, but also collect sports drinks and comfort kits and even raise awareness about disaster preparedness.
- Health and Safety Services—youth teach Basic Aid Training to elementary school students, and once 16 years old, they can even teach CPR and First Aid to adults!
- International Services—youth have raised thousands of dollars for the Measles Initiative each year, in addition to tens of thousands of dollars for victims of major international disasters.
- Service to the Armed Forces—youth support both veterans and active military personnel through events such as the Veteran’s Day Parade and by taking steps as simple as thanking local military recruiters.
